和歌で見る京都・奈良

概要

In this seminar, we will explore famous places in the waka tradition. We will focus on sites in and around the ancient capitals of Kyoto and Nara, while also examining key points beyond. Why were these places
important to poets? How did their significance and associations change over time? What relation do these places have to waka today? In seeking to answer these questions, we will also consider the role of
place in modern life and society. This seminar will be conducted in Japanese and English. Course materials will include pre-modern Japanese texts, modern Japanese translations, and English translations.
