English Translation and Japanese Poetry

概要

Is true that, as Robert Frost is thought to have once said, “poetry is what gets lost in translation”? In this seminar, we will consider this question as we examine the translation of Japanese poetry into English. Different genres will be introduced, but we will focus on short verse (waka), arguably the most influential of the various Japanese poetic genres. In addition to examining existing translations, students will be asked to create their own. Approaches to and issues in Japanese to English translation will also be discussed.
